[ARCHIVED] Public Forum on Residential Rent Conditions

City Press Releases Downtown

GRANTS PASS – The City of Grants Pass will conduct an open public forum to present the 2019 Snapshot of Residential Rental Conditions 6-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, in Council Chambers at City Hall, 101 NW “A” St. The event is open to the public and is family friendly.

Presenters will review residential rental statistics specific to the City of Grants Pass. There will be an opportunity for the public to share perspectives about this important issue facing the community. Refreshments will be provided.

In 2018, the State of Oregon passed House Bill (HB) 4006 requiring cities with a population of more than 10,000, and with at least 25 percent of its renter households paying more than 50 percent of their gross income towards rent, to hold a public forum on the topic.

The State of Oregon recognizes a household as “rent burdened” if the renter is paying more than 30 percent of their gross income towards rent. Renter households paying more than 50 percent of their gross income toward rent are considered “severely rent burdened.”

A recent report published by Realtor.com declared Grants Pass the third-most unaffordable housing market in the country when adjusted against income. Six out of 10 renting households in the city pay more than 30 percent of their gross income toward rent and three out of 10 renting households are paying more than 50 percent of their gross income toward rent.

The public forum will address these statistics, as well as the causes of rent burden, the barriers to reducing rent burdens, and possible solutions. For additional information, visit grantspassoregon.gov.
