[ARCHIVED] Mayor Proclaims May 3-9 Drinking Water Week

DWW Proclamation

GRANTS PASS – Grants Pass Mayor Roy Lindsay formally declared May 3-9, 2020, as Drinking Water Week. Lindsay delivered the proclamation at a special city council meeting Monday, May 4, and urged all city residents to join in supporting the observance.

Across the nation, utilities, private companies, and government agencies are joining together to celebrate this year’s Drinking Water Week theme, “There when you need it,” highlighting the importance of reliable drinking water service and the value of water.

“Grants Pass residents are encouraged to recognize this precious resource and to help protect our source waters from pollution, to practice water conservation, to actively support the upkeep of our drinking water infrastructure, to become involved in local water issues, and plan for its efficient use,” said Lindsay.

Water from the Rogue River has supplied the City of Grants Pass with its drinking water since 1888. Today, water from the city’s Water Treatment Plant delivers high-quality water to drinking fountains, coffee shops, craft breweries, kitchen sinks, and faucets throughout the city with the turn of a tap.

“Grants Pass residents rely on the city water system to provide a safe and dependable supply of water, both now and in the future,” Lindsay said.

National Drinking Water Week recognizes the importance of protecting water sources, conservation, maintenance, and investment. It also highlights the value, importance, and fragility of the state’s water resources.

“Protecting and investing in our drinking water system is essential to preserve our own health and economy and that of future generations,” said Lindsay.

The drinking water infrastructure in many cities is aging and presents daunting resource demands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the entire nation continues to be challenged by new and emerging drinking water pollutants.

By formally recognizing this national celebration, the Grants Pass City Council renewed its commitment to build on more than a century of success, and to continue to work with partners in the water community to fully realize the public health goals of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Planned celebration events include a Youth Poster Contest, features on the city’s Water Treatment Plant, and educational outreach activities, including free remote learning lesson plans and projects. For additional information, visit the city’s website: https://www.grantspassoregon.gov/354/Water.
